Seminar on the Need of Packaging Reforms to Reduce Demand for Cigarettes in Pakistan:

TheNetwork for Consumer Protection held a seminar stressing the need for packaging
Reforms to Reduce Demand for Cigarettes in Pakistan in collaboration with Fatima Memorial
Hospital, Lahore on January 27, 2009 at Lahore.
The objective of the seminar was to create awareness among the policy-makers and opinion
leaders of the province of Punjab regarding the need of packaging reforms in Pakistan.
This seminar is a part of The Network’s campaign “Policy Advocacy and Stakeholder Awareness
Building for Packaging Reforms to Reduce Demand for Cigarettes in Pakistan” funded by
Bloomberg Grant Initiative.
Chief Guest of the seminar Dr. Asad Ashraf, Member Provincial Assembly, Punjab addressed the
audiences of the seminar and appreciated the efforts of The Network for Consumer Protection.
Others speakers of the seminar were Dr. Mansoor Javed, Pulmonologist at Shoukat Khanum Cancer
Hospital, Dr. Tariq Bhutta, the founding member of The Network, Dr. Humayon Maqsood,
Dr. Aman-Ullah Khan, Head of Community Medicine, FMH and Ms. Aasma Qamer, The Network for
Consumer Protection. Speakers highlighted the state of tobacco prevalence and control and the
need to reduce burden of tobacco related illnesses in Pakistan.
During the seminar, a poster competition on dangers of smoking was held among the students
of Fatima Memorial Medical & Dental College, Lahore
