Dr Arif Azad
Executive Coordinator
A medical graduate from Allama Iqbal Medical College, with an MSc in Public Policy and Management from the
University of London, Dr Arif has worked in media and development sector in both Pakistan and Western Europe.
He commands vast experience in policy advocacy, research and media relations. In the UK, he worked for a
range of rights based advocacy and campaigning organisations such as The Monitoring Group, Amnesty International
and Index on Censorship. The Monitoring Group has led two major policy changes campaigns – the Stephen Lawrence
and the Zahid Mubarek – in Britain. Both these advocacy campaigns resulted in public inquiries which introduced
far-reaching policy changes into the British policing and prison system. In Europe he worked with United against
racism which is a network of more than 500 European NGOs active on the issues of migrants’ rights and
discrimination issues. Dr Arif Azad co- founded Awaz-South Asia Watch which gained a high reputation for its work
on human rights in South Asia and South Asian communities in Britain. Since moving back to Pakistan, he worked
with SDPI and LEAD Pakistan. In recent months he has consulted for the UNDP, Plan, and Oxfam Novib. Dr Arif Azad
has contributed to the Guardian, Index On Censorship, War and Peace Reporting, BBC World Service, Economic and
Political weekly, The News, Dawn and Friday Times .
