National Alliance formed with media to raise mass awarness about promotion of breastfeeding and IDDs control
|
ISLAMABAD, July 1, 2009; TheNetwork for consumer protection organized a consultative meeting on “role of media in
promotion of Breastfeeding and Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDDs) here on Wednesday to form a National Alliance
with Media persons and opinion makers.
TheNetwork has launched a campaign for “Advocacy, Awareness & Monitoring of Implementation of Breastfeeding laws
and promotion of IDDs legislation enforcement”. TheNetwork formed this media alliance because we strongly believe
that media can play a significant role in helping to protect and promote breastfeeding and to control IDDs through
raising mass awareness among the nation.
Dr. Sher Baz Deputy Director General, Nutrition Wing Ministry of Health discussed the status of implementation of
BF ordinance 2002. Dr. SherBaz shared that ministry of health has initiated 35 baby friendly health care
facilities in all over the Pakistan. Government is more focusing on trainings for lady health workers in this
regards.
The meeting started with the welcoming remarks by Waqar Ahmed, Executive Coordinator-TheNetwork. He welcomed
representatives of the print and electronic media and explained the aims and objectives of the meeting. The
emphasized on advocacy for development of laws & policies for protection of Breastfeeding practices. He urged that
media can play an important role in increasing public awareness for the promotion of breastfeeding as the standard
for the infants’ development and growth.
Robina Bhatti, project Coordinator, made a presentation on behalf of TheNetwork on, “A Way forward – Future
Strategy. She suggested ToRs and Action-plan of the Alliance”.
Dr. Riffat Aysha Anis from National Institute of Health made a presentation on Myths Facts and Challenges of
Iodized Salt to enhance the significance of issue for the media people.
Dr. Shahid Awan representative of UNICEF, Pakistan highlighted Status of Breastfeeding in Pakistan; Infant &
Young Child Feeding Strategy.
Ms. Shehr Bano, The News Karachi highlighted the role of media in the promotion of breastfeeding ordinance for
better implementation.
A documentary on the state of Iodine Deficiency Disorders was screened to the audiences.
A moderated discussion was held after the presentations. The discussion resulted in following valuable
recommendation from speakers as well as the media persons. It was concluded that media can play a key role in
creating hype to take appropriate measures to achieve above mentioned objectives.
