TheNational Alliance for Breastfeeding Promotion was formed in May 2008 with the aim to protect,
support and promote breastfeeding in Pakistan. This Alliance has technical support from Nutrition
Wing, Ministry of Health, UNICEF and WHO. The Alliance has 14 NGOs as member. This national
Alliance includes Nutrition Wing, Ministry of Health, Govt. of Pakistan, UNICEF, WHO,
TheNetwork for Consumer Protection, SPARC, NRSP, Plan-Pakistan, FPAP, Sultana Foundation,
SUNGI Development Foundation, BINA, PAIMAN, PAIDAR, Blue Veins, Save the Children UK, Islamabad
Medical and Dental College and Bakhtawar Amin Memorial Trust. The secretariat and convener-ship
is with TheNetwork for Consumer Protection.
18th Global Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7, 2009)
The 18th Global Breastfeeding Week from August 01 to 07, 2009 is being celebrated with the theme “BREASTFEEDING:
A Vital Emergency Response. Are You Ready?”. In Pakistan, a week long drive of mass awareness and advocacy will
be lunched by National Alliance for Promotion & Protection of Breastfeeding (NAPBf), coordinated by TheNetwork
for Consumer protection in Pakistan. Following is account of planned activities during the week:

Preparatory Meeting of NAPBf partners will be during July to finalize Joint activities of WBW
- A Media advisory as well as media toolkit will be issued to all print/electronic media outlets for increased
support to highlight BF issue in media.
- A Joint Press Briefing will be held on 31st July for media to launch a vigorous campaign of GBW 2009.
- Printed material such as leaflets & posters will be displayed and distributed at health facilities and public
places by National Alliance members as well as 3000 members of TheNetwork throughout the country.
- News items and articles will be written for the print media on importance of BF, Ordinance 2002 and issue
related to its implementation.
- News and views on the importance of breastfeeding will be aired through TV channels (Aaj TV, PTV, Geo, ATV &
ARY News) and FM Radio. Doctors/ Health Experts/NAPBf partners will be the panelists.
- Sensitization Sessions will be held with LHWs, healthcare professionals, mothers and communities in different
districts nationwide.
- A National Seminar on BREASTFEEDING: “A Key Element to Achieve MDGs and Save Lives in Emergencies” will be
held. The Nutrition Wing, MoH, UNICEF and Alliance Partners will be actively engaged in this.
